Is Football the Most Popular Sport?

Football or soccer is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports in the world. It's played in almost every country in the world. The FIFA world cup or more commonly known as the 'Football World Cup' is considered by many as the 'greatest show on earth'.

However, there are other local sports in many countries which are usually more popular in the region. The reason I am writing 'usually' has a significant point behind it. So, is football actually the most popular sport on earth?

Television ban in Bhutan

Until 1999, Bhutanese govt applied a ban on  the television and the internet. The reason was to protect the culture and traditions of the nation. But a wave of protest was initialized by the football fans of Bhutan during the 1998 world cup as they were not able to watch the event due to the lack of televisions. As a result the government had to withdraw the ban. So, it clearly shows the popularity of the FIFA world cup. But does it prove the popularity of the sport? Probably not.

Cricket vs football

Cricket is the national sport of England. But it is more like a religion in India. A vast population in India plays cricket, watches cricket, lives cricket and even worship their favorite cricketers. It's also almost equally popular in India's neighboring countries such as, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan etc. 

Countries in the Indian subcontinent are not much developed or rich and cricket requires a lot of kits, technologies and cannot be played in rain. So cricket being popular here is quite interesting. Some developed countries who play Test cricket include England, Australia and New Zealand. However, cricket is not as popular in England as football, not as popular in Australia and New Zealand as Rugby.

Even in India, although Cricket is the most popular sport, almost everywhere people watch the FIFA world cup and many Indians follow different football leagues around the globe.

No country in the sub continent has ever qualified to play in the FIFA world cup and don't hold top positions at the rankings. So the popularity of football there can only be measured when their national teams qualify for the FIFA world cup. Nevertheless they frequently support top level teams such as Brazil and Argentina, buy their jerseys and even paint buildings to support there favorite teams. You can see a lot of Brazil, Argentina and German flags waving on the rooftops of buildings in the subcontinent.

Football in North America

In the US and Canada there are several football stadiums. As of 2026 Football superstar Lionel Messi plays in a football league in the US. You see, a lot of people in the US are immigrants. They go to America from all around the world. So there are football audiences in the US and Canada. Naturally their demand for watching football has led to the investments in leagues.

But what about the citizens of the US who have been living there for generations? The two top most popular sports in the US are the baseball and american football. Basketball is also very popular. Americans continuously win Olympic gold medals and many of them watch tennis and races. So in a way, you cannot name a single most popular sport in the USA and Canada. But you can easily say that football is not the most popular.

However, there are other countries in North America, where football is extremely popular. In fact Mexican team is one of the top ranked teams in the world.

Football in Australia and New Zealand 

As mentioned earlier, the most popular game in Australia is arguably rugby. They also play cricket and even won the cricket world cup several times. They win gold medals in the Olympics. Australia and New Zealand have played in several football world cups; so they must be playing it very seriously and investing money on it. But does that mean football is the most popular game there? Probably not.

Football in Asia

There are many many local games in all over Asia. From the deserts of the middle east to the islands of Japan, many countries, regardless of ethnicity, religion and politics play football, watch football and even participate in the world cups.

In 2022, Saudi Arabian government declared a national holiday after their national team had beaten the Argentinian nation team in the world cup. Due to religious restrictions, some of their footballers even play with full pants on. You can see hundreds of thousands of Japanese and Korean fans in the stadium during the matches of their national sides. So you can guess the popularity of football in all over Asia. But as I said earlier, a local sport or another sport is usually locally popular; either equally or even more.

Football in Africa

A long list of African countries play in the football world cups. Not just that, many players belonging to African families have played and still playing in different European or American football leagues.

Football legends like Zinedine Zidane belongs to an Algerian family. Same goes for Kylian Mbappe and many more. Again, there are local sports but football is watched and played everywhere. South Africa even hosted the football world cup in 2010.

Football in South America

In South America people literally live football. Brazil and Argentina get support from fans all over the world. First two world cups were won by Uruguay. Brazil have won 5 titles and Argentina have won 3. 

Not just South America, countries in middle America have a huge fan base for football. South American football is popular for its rhythm. Brazilian football even said to have Samba dance influence in their playing style. So it can be said that football is popular in South and Middle Americas.

Football in Europe 

This can be said without any survey that football is the most popular sport in Europe. Although Cricket is the national sport in England and they claim to be the inventors of football, the popularity of football is probably 10 times more than the popularity of cricket in England. Even during the cricket worlds cups English people don't show much interest in the game whereas during a simple football league match, the roads in London become empty. English, Spanish, German and Italian football leagues and clubs are popular all around the world. Popularity of footballers playing in these leagues are usually beyond the popularity that is imaginable. Two great players who played in the Spanish premiere league, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have fans who celebrate their birthdays from thousands of miles away. You can definitely say that Football Is the most popular game in Europe.

So based on all the discussions above, here is a quick review:

United States and Canada: Popular more among the newer generations of immigrants.

Central and South America: Extremely popular.

Australia and New Zealand: Fairly popular as they prefer other games.

Indian subcontinent: Very popular but they play and watch cricket more.

Middle east and other parts of Asia: Extremely popular.

Africa: Extremely popular.

Europe: Beyond extremely popular.

Popular or common

This is the million dollar question. Is football the most popular or the most common sport?

If you see the conclusions we have drawn above, football is the most common team sport all around the world. All it takes is a ball and some space. You can play without equipment such as bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs and any expensive accessories. You can play football in rain or during cold. The simplicity of arranging a football match makes it the most common team sport played by humans.

From everything discussed above, we can conclude that football is the most commonly played team sport and men's football world cups are the most watched sport events. However, that doesn't prove it to be the most popular sport all around the world. There are other local sport or locally popular sport in all parts of the world.
